The 4 Advantages of Adopting SaaS vs On Premises for the Packaging Industry

By Mario Ishikawa, CTO at PackIOT The IoT revolution is here and we cannot deny it. What is incredible for manufacturing is that with the IoT adoption on the shop floor, we saw the convergence of OT - Operational Technology with IT - Information Technology, creating the Industrial Internet of Things, or IIoT. It does not mean killing what is already out there, but bringing more connectivity and use cases for so much data that can be collected on a plant. But certainly, there is an overlap. If in the past the stack PLC + SCADA or dedicated gateway was basically the only option to collect data from the process, now there are many more possibilities. And when we are not talking about critical missions, it is certainly viable to think in a system on the cloud. One thing is when you need your operator to keep the process in control using an HMI. Another thing is when you want your manager to study past data to make better maintenance decisions for a packaging line. For that case, a cloud solution, presented as a SaaS (software as a service) offering can have several advantages: 1_Converting CapEx to…

The Industry 4.0 in Europe and the Packaging Industry

By Mariana Costa, Marketing Specialist at PackIOT A lot of questions have been raised regarding the capacity that Europe has to adapt to the revolution of Industry 4.0 and in the packaging industry in particular. In this blog post we will go over the four main topics to cover this subject Opportunities of Industry 4.0 Challenges Europe is facing to adopt Industry 4.0 Context in the packaging industry regarding Industry 4.0 The next steps to boost the adoption of 4.0 technologies According to the study done by Interreg Europe on Industry 4.0, the industrial sector has been seeing a great development due to the adoption of new digital technologies, materials and processes. The Industry 4.0 is progressively becoming a priority for policymakers in Europe. It can present itself as an impulse to productivity gains, redefine the whole industrial production model and potentially having a major impact on manufacturing employment.   Nevertheless, there is a very interesting scenario to be analyzed. Between 2007 and 2017, the EU economy has experienced a decline from 20.1% to 19.6% of the relative contribution of industry. Besides, the share of the industry also ranges from 30% in Ireland and Czech Republic to…

PackIOT Talks: Digital Transformation In Action with José Mauricio Coelho, CEO of C-Pack

Digital transformation is a topic that has been following us for quite a while. Since February/March 2020, we all saw how technology plays an important role in our lives, when we were saw ourselves forced to be in quarantine for two or more months straight. Suddenly our home became our office as well and seeing friends and family was only possible through a screen. Technology was our lifesaver during that period as it allowed us to keep in touch with each other. Companies who had not digitalized themselves until then, were forced to do so, in order to survive. “I know this is a hard moment but it is also an important one, where all the technological resources are more required than ever before, not only in the industry 4.0. I think now we are talking about family 4.0, work 4.0. Everybody is migrating to 4.0”. - José Mauricio Coelho, CEO of C-Pack José Mauricio Coelho, CEO of C-Pack Creative Packaging SA, has been following the evolution of technology over the years. He has been managing the implementation process of digital transformation projects. On this talk, he approaches the several obstacles he has come across with and…

Why real-time data matters for the packaging industry

I don't even think we should start this article by telling you the benefits of real-time data. The best approach is to begin by showing you what happens when you don't have it. A good way to explain this is to imagine a scenario where you're driving your car: not having real-time data is the same as looking through the rearview mirror while driving, without paying attention to the road. Can you imagine pilots, air traffic controllers, and airport managers relying only on data collected 12 hours ago? Or two weeks ago? They need to make decisions on real-time. It seems an exaggerated example (and it is), but it's just to make a point and warn you that your plant might be losing a lot of money if you keep on using data collected on paper and excel spreadsheets (which have become obsolete). Manufacturing plants that do not have real-time data are always one step behind of the resolution of any problem. Or worse, they are always one step behind of finding out they have a problem. Real-time data in the packaging industry (manufacturing) The evolution of technology makes changes happen at an ever-increasing speed and in…

IPackEXPO is gathering high-level packaging specialists in a global digital event

By Ruwen Moodley - The Open Packaging Network When we’re faced with a global pandemic such as the latest COVID-19 outbreak, this gives us the opportunity to reassess if our organizations are truly flexible enough to overcome obstacles. With the recent outbreak, all sorts of events have been canceled worldwide, including many major international trade-shows and global sourcing events that businesses rely on for the constant growth opportunities they present. According to the World Trade Organization, world trade is set to plunge by between 13-32% this year and this highlights the need for innovative solutions to induce trade within the packaging industry to combat the effect of the pandemic on the industry. The Open Packaging Network (OPN Platform) - already proven global leader of packaging industry digitalization, is ready to support packaging related companies in this trying time and host a First-Ever permanent virtual digital Trade Show - IPackEXPO for packaging industry stakeholders and decision-makers to meet and showcase their products, and continue to drive business. The rise of virtual events has given us the opportunity to off-set the effects of the pandemic as well as presented many new opportunities within the industry. Here are some of…

5 reasons why your packaging manufacturing factory should not have manual data inputs

Manual data entry is one of the biggest headaches in companies from different sectors. Manually processed tasks are more susceptible to human errors, which interfere directly with the performance of results. That is because inaccurate information hinders leaders in decision-making and can lead to catastrophic actions. In addition to these first points mentioned above, other numerous problems arise when manufacturing companies still use the manual method to collect, input, or store data. That's why our team of experts has created this guide with five reasons why you should not have manual data entry in your plant.  1. Manual data entry can drive to human errors As you might imagine, problem number one is related to human error. A natural feature of human beings is that we are never fully focused. For many reasons, we can be distracted when performing a task, commiting errors that can only be identified later when they have already hindered the progress of activities. And there are several factors that interfere with the probability of "human error" occurring. Either due to the complexity of a job, extensive working hours, excessive pressure from managers, among other reasons that lead the employee to be tired…

7 Biggest Mistakes Packaging Factories Make With OEE

OEE + Packaging Manufacturers + Challenges Every production manager is familiar with OEE (an abbreviation for the manufacturing metric Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and has tried to implement it in their factory. For a production manager, OEE is almost as important as his or her credit rate, body mass index or golf handicap. It carries the simplicity of being a single number and this is great. However, there are many traps to avoid when using this in your factory to know if you are doing it right or not. Below we would be outlining the most frequent mistakes packaging manufacturers make when using the “holy number”. 1. Comparing Apples To Bananas Since it is a single number, people tend to use it to compare different factories, as a method of comparing their efficiency. This is a dangerous game, for some reasons: Not all companies calculate OEE the same way. Actually, if you ask 10 production managers how they calculate OEE, you will get 11 different answers. Some exclude preventive maintenance from the availability calculations, others exclude holidays others don’t. Batch sizes and process inherent particularities can hugely affect OEE. Take for example a film extrusion line compared to cosmetic plastic…
