Why Data Visualization is Crucial for Gaining Actionable Insights into Your Metrics

In an industrial landscape where data is the new oil, organizations are tirelessly working to extract, process, and make sense of an ever-growing sea of information. While metrics and KPIs serve as the navigational stars in this complex universe, the key to unlocking actionable insights often lies in the presentation of that data. This is where data visualization comes into play. For the industrial sector, which often deals with large volumes of complex metrics, data visualization is not a mere add-on; it's a necessity. This article aims to explore why data visualization is so pivotal in turning raw metrics into insights that drive meaningful action. What is Data Visualization? At its core, data visualization is the practice of converting raw, unstructured data into a visual format. However, this simple definition doesn't capture the breadth and depth of what data visualization truly encompasses. The technique employs an extensive array of visual elements—ranging from traditional charts and graphs to complex heat maps and 3D models—to represent data in a manner that is both intuitive and insightful. But why does this graphical representation matter, especially in an industrial setting? The Evolution of Data Complexity Industries have shifted from collecting a…

How Knowing The OEE Can Help Your Factory Become More Efficient?

By Eduardo Weingärtner, Chief Data Officer at PackIOT In today’s highly competitive and fast-moving markets, it is essential for manufacturing companies to promote a culture of continuous improvement in the entire organization in order to become more productive and efficient. To stay ahead you need to always keep an eye on the next level of performance. It is thus important to focus, not only but also, on how to eliminate “waste”, i.e. activities that do not add value to the customers. But before the “how” can be answered, one needs to know where the problems are. Thus - as in Six Sigma -  you first need to measure and analyze your processes before being able to improve them. When it comes to the shop-floor, the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a great metric to be followed. OEE can help you identify the main sources of waste in the production lines/equipment and consequently highlight areas of possible improvement. At the same time, it is also a powerful way of benchmarking progress.   As mentioned in one of PackIOT’s previous blog posts, in a perfect production OEE would equal 100%. Thus, if a production line or equipment has an OEE…

How CEOs, owners and board members play a key role in digital transformation in manufacturing

This topic is almost an obsession in our PackIOT leadership conversations and in our team meetings. Every day we interact with customers and leads from around the globe, read reports, listen to podcasts, take courses on the future of the industry, and everything is heading in the same direction: CEOs, Owners or Board Members play a key role in the digital transformation journey of a factory. For many, many years, the top layer of the SME industry has been in love with modern machines. A dear person always said: this folks like to go to trade shows and come back with new machines. Not being a guy who comes from an industrial background, I thought this was a joke. Until I started seeing LinkedIn posts of CEOs doing photos and videos, even to this day. And from there came one of the main personal and corporate missions of recent times for us: to help CEOs pull innovation and digital transformation in their factories. We've been trying to do this in various ways, with free educational content, case studies, and raising awareness in the manufacturing community, especially in the packaging, cosmetics, food and beverage and Pharma sectors. This…

Key Steps To Start Deploying Analytics On The Shop Floor

By Mario Ishikawa, CTO at PackIOT Industry 4.0 is happening but the reality is that most companies are handling data on paper. To think about analytics on the shop floor, one of the first things to be done is to automate not only the process, but the data collection and transformation. This is a key step to think about Artificial Intelligence or other terms like Digital Twins and that is how Industry 4.0 has to start. Can you imagine a Digital Twin relying on manual input? It does not even make sense, so before we talk about it we have to make sure we have all the required data available in open format, as opposed to data silos, and collected in an automated process. So, how to start with Analytics? And where? It is good to start thinking about what you want to measure. Thinking about analytics, you probably want a good picture of how the production process is going, how machines and shifts are performing so you can understand how it can be improved. And this is where OEE takes place. OEE stands for Overall Equipment Efficiency and was coined by Seiichi Nakajima. OEE basically transforms…

Your factory may truly disappear if you don’t take care of digitalization. And this is not a rumor

It is hard to talk about the disappearance of companies, the innovation gap, or the loss of market potential without remembering Kodak. If this story is already familiar to you, feel free to skip to the next topic. If not, read it carefully (please). If we stepped back in time a couple of decades to buy a camera: it would not be strange if the camera, its film, and finally the photograph were provided by the same supplier: Kodak. The famous company was founded in 1888 and for a long time one of the most valuable brands in the USA. Knowing the rise and fall of Kodak is an excellent way to understand how difficult it is to maintain a great business in this world of dizzying changes, where it is usual to see giants of the industry fall. The case of Kodak is exemplary: the first digital camera was born in their laboratories (1975) and they began to launch their first digital cameras to the market in the nineties. They were warned at least 10 years in advance of the relevance that digital photography would have and still went under. In 2012, Kodak filed for bankruptcy.…

By Mariana Costa, Marketing Specialist at PackIOT Today, more than ever before, the beauty and cosmetics industry is starting to experience what it is like to have technological innovation at the heart of its value chain, contributing to higher performances, greater agility and flexibility. This not only applies to the consumer but also to the employees since it simplifies and facilitates their everyday and enables better ergonomics. What does innovating mean? Not only means to be able to rely on the expertise of the teams but doing so while adopting the latest 4.0 technologies with cutting-edge capabilities, to create the most efficient solutions and conditions both for employees and consumers. We have already mentioned several times how Industry 4.0 and technological innovation concerns all parties of the value chain and the different fields of an industrial group, such as: research and development, environment, design, production and digital, for example. It is also crucial for operations and performance management. This is an omnipresent component from design to distribution, product development and manufacturing. Production processes in the cosmetics industry will only become more networked. Centrally controlled plants will be replaced by production systems which allow the communication between machines,…

In this blog post, we will answer all these questions and more by showing you how Industry 4.0 is here to stay in the Flexible Packaging industry. So, with this in mind, let’s ask the question again: Why should you accelerate digital transformation? When we talk about Digital Transformation in its full potential we are considering a journey towards a fully connected and transparent value chain, from the suppliers to the brand owners or from the retailers to the consumers.´ We all have expectations regarding each participant of the value chain. For example, we expect suppliers to have the best quality, at the best price and at the right time. But have you ever stopped to think about your daily operation? It’s normal to run after a constant fix-the-machine-and-run mindset to stay on the safe side, it’s human and natural. Nevertheless, there is a price to pay for this safety called…

When Is The Best Time To Integrate an ERP With Your Production Analytics Software?

By Fernando Pacheco, COO at PackIOT We have constantly been talking about how digital transformation in the industry should start with baby steps or pilot projects (or MVP, if you are already familiar with this concept). Manufacturing plants around the world have been looking for production optimization and Industry 4.0 solutions, and there is always one question on top of the decision tables: when is the best time to integrate an ERP with your production analytics software? We will explore this topic throughout this article but one thing is already clear: ideally, you should not integrate any new software with ERP from the start. Example: Are you implementing a MES or an IoT system? The first step is to make sure the roll-out will be a success. After, you can focus on the other integrations. 1_Each thing is a unique thing: ERP Enterprise Resource Planning is an information system that links all the data and processes of an organization into a single system. The interconnection can be seen from the functional perspective (finance, accounting, human resources, manufacturing, marketing, sales, purchasing, etc.) and from the systemic perspective (transaction processing system, management information systems, decision support systems, etc.). ERP is…
